Obituary

Bobbie Jean Bruton Kirby was born on July 24, 1939, in Wofford, South Carolina, to the late Henry Bruton and Amelia Bruton. She entered into Eternal Rest on April 1, 2025. Her journey through life was marked by impeccable style, grace, vision, and a steadfast commitment to uplifting others.

A proud product of Rock Hill Elementary and Florence Chapel High School in Wellford, South Carolina, Bobbie was a natural leader even in her youth. She balanced academic excellence with a vibrant presence in student life—serving as a cheerleader, co-captain of the girls' basketball team, a member of the annual staff, and an active voice on the student council. Her drive, confidence, and ability to inspire those around her were evident early on.

Bobbie pursued higher education at Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. Her professional journey began in the public schools of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and soon led her to Albany State College, where she served as a dorm counselor. Bobbie's unwavering commitment to education and her desire to lead and serve brought her to the Dougherty County School System. Over the span of her 36-year career, she rose through the ranks from classroom teacher to Assistant Director of Special Education—a role in which she led with integrity, innovation, and fierce advocacy for students with special needs.

Never one to rest on her laurels, Bobbie pursued continual growth, earning a Master's degree in Special Education from Florida A&M University and a Specialist degree from Valdosta State College. She embodied the essence of a lifelong learner and visionary, consistently striving for excellence not only for herself but for her students, colleagues, and the broader community.

At Albany State College, Bobbie met her life partner and kindred spirit, Mr. Elvie Lee Kirby, Jr. They were united in holy matrimony on August 23, 1964, and shared 59 years of unwavering love, partnership, and purpose. Together, they raised two sons and remained devoted members of Union Missionary Baptist Church for over 40 years.

Bobbie was a woman of strength, principle, and compassion. She was admired for her sharp intellect, commanding presence, and unshakeable moral compass. Whether mentoring a young educator, guiding a student, or offering a listening ear to a neighbor, she led with both heart and wisdom. Her influence reached far and wide, touching lives in classrooms, boardrooms, sanctuaries, and living rooms alike.

She is lovingly remembered by her sons, Raphael A. Kirby, Sr. (Andre) of Albany, Georgia, and Durante Kirby (Maria) of Atlanta, Georgia; her grandchildren, Artez, Astrid, Thai, Amelia, Alicia, Miles, and Mason; her cherished nieces and nephews of South Carolina; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, godchildren, dear friends, and neighbors.

Bobbie Bruton Kirby's life was a shining testament to faith, leadership, and legacy. She now rests in peace, but her powerful example and enduring love will continue to inspire generations to come.
