Charles Edward Matthews was born June 3, 1928 in Geneva County, Slocumb, Alabama, to the late Janie Lee White Matthews and Charles Elliott Matthews.

He attended Newton High School in Newton, Georgia.

At an early age, he confessed CHRIST and joined the St. John Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.  Later on in 1990, he joined the Healing Temple, Inc. where he served faithfully until his health declined.

"Ted", as he was affectionately called, was a great father, grandfather, loving provider to his family.  He always had a word to make a person smile or laugh.  He had a kind heart and would help where needed.

He was united in Holy Matrimony on July 7, 1948 to the former Mattie Ruth Hayward.  To this union eleven children were born.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three children, Janie Ruth Drake-Crawford, Charlene Gardner, Cleatrice Delois Vicks; one stepson, James Franklin Johnson.

He departed this life on Saturday, December 23, 2017, at Archbold Medical Center in Thomasville, Georgia.

He leaves to cherish his loving memories, eight children, Marvalene Foster of Atlanta, Georgia, Lillie (Henderson) Johnson, Terry Ann (Andrew) Banks of Camilla, Georgia, Joe (Umeka) Matthews of Jacksonville, Florida, Leonard Charles Simpson of Moultrie, Georgia, Sandra (Collin) Reagan, Teresa (Jeremiah) Thornton of Macon, Georgia, Rose (Anthony) Thomas, of Aiea Hawaii; one stepson, Robert Miller of Albany, Georgia; two brothers, Arthur Roberts of Newton, Georgia, Willie James Roberts of Albany, Georgia; forty-eight grandchildren; a host of great grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and many friends.
