IN LOVING MEMORY OF
E. Maxine
Chavis
September 7, 1940 – August 24, 2021
E. Maxine Chavis was born on September 7, 1940 to the late Nannie Mae Phipps-Kitchens and Evans Trice in Newton, GA. A gentle soul, Maxine always had a gift for connecting with people and leaving every place she encountered better than she found it.
After working 30 years in the banking industry in the New York area, Maxine returned to Newton, GA permanently in the mid 1990s to care for her mother for well over a decade. Maxine tirelessly devoted those years to providing the best care she could. To enhance her knowledge in healthcare, Maxine enrolled in Albany Technical College where she completed the Medical Assisting Program. She spent two years as a Certified Medical Assistant at the office of Dr. W. Carl Gordon, Jr., P.C., F.A.C.S. in Albany, GA.
Maxine was a dedicated community member who devoted her time to service until her last days. In 2020 at 79 years old, Maxine ran for County Commissioner to uplift Baker County and champion the needs of the local community. Her campaign run inspired people around the country, young and old, who learned of her new found journey in politics and community activism. In addition to being a faithful member of New Salem C.M.E. Church, she was also a long standing volunteer for SOWEGA Council of Aging, Inc. and Phoebe Hospice for 21 years and served as an election poll worker for Baker County Board of Elections.
Maxine - affectionately known as Max, Mother, Nana, and Hun – loved supporting her children and selflessly went the extra mile to nurture her family. Known for her pound cake and red velvet cake, she made sure to bring her sweet treats to all family gatherings. During her free time, Maxine crocheted blankets for the new babies born into our family. And on any given day or night, she would connect with Kristen's friends on Facebook and post an encouraging word. She navigated every app and virtual site to support her family and would even stay up overnight to actively participate in Kristen's music appreciation series. Maxine was truly the life of the party and her smile brightened every room.
In addition to her parents, Maxine is preceded in death by her brother, Evins Trice, Jr.
Maxine made her transition on August 24, 2021 at Piedmont Hospital in Stockbridge, Georgia.
She is survived by her son, Jon Scott Harden; daughter, Jacquelin Victoria Harden-Chavis; son-in-love, Joel Alexander Harden; daughter-in-love, Maria Romero-Garcia; granddaughter, Kristen Victoria Carter; three brothers, David, Benjamin and Clinton, one sister, Irma Jean; along with a multitude of cousins, nieces, nephews, and loving friends.
