Obituary

On July 25, 1964, Evette Celearn Canty was born in Miami, Florida to the late Earnestine Stevens Canty and the late Rev. Daniel H. Canty. She was affectionally called "Pumpkin" by her father at birth due to her skin's orange hue resulting from jaundice. She later gained the nickname, "Boobie" by family. Evette was the apple of her parents' eye until their untimely transition. She was a quiet, easygoing child, preferring to play alone, but never to be underestimated once provoked. Evette had a way with "colorful" words that would leave any adult scratching their head. Regardless of the many disciplinary recourses imposed, her "vocabulary" could only be curtailed if only for the moment. While growing up, she enjoyed talking on the phone, listening to music, watching tv and going to the movies.

Evette began primary school in Detroit, Michigan. She continued her elementary and part of her junior high education in Gretna, Florida. Eventually her mother, sister, and she returned to Miami, residing at the infamous "8920" with the family of her loving aunt and uncle. She entered Horace Mann Jr. High School (now middle school) and later graduated from Miami Central Sr. High School with the class of 1983. As for her spiritual journey, Evette was introduced to Christianity at an early age. She was first sprinkled at her maternal family's grassroots - Springfield AME Church in Gretna, Florida where she participated in Sunday School and the youth choir. Once introduced to Baptist doctrine, she was baptized at Millrock Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Andrew Jackson. Later the family moved their membership to New Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church led by the late Reverend Arthur Jackson, Jr. It was there that Evette strengthened her spiritual walk of faith. Just to name a few auxiliaries, Evette faithfully sang in the Voices of Shiloh and New Shiloh Mass Choir. As an adult, she later relocated with her mother and late aunt (Celestine Washington) to Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Pelham, Georgia.

On Friday, January 19, Evette heeded the gentle voice of our Heavenly Father beckoning her home to rest. She leaves to cherish fond memories: sisters, Barbara Shelton (Jacksonville, Florida) and Sharren Canty (Miami, Florida); nephews: Kyle Shelton (Atlanta, Georgia) and Mondale Canty (Miami, Florida), and Azell Canty (Miami, Florida); niece: Shanetta Canty (Miami, Florida).  In essence, Evette leaves a host of family and friends to mourn and cherish her everlasting memories.
