Obituary

Freddie Mae Johnson Toombs was born the youngest daughter of five children to Douglas Lee Johnson of Havana, Florida and Piccola Williams Johnson of Camilla, Georgia, in Camilla, Georgia, on January 12, 1949. The Johnson children consisted of two boys and three girls, in which Freddie Mae enjoyed spending time with her mom and helping others.

She gained her education in the Mitchell County Public School System. Throughout school, her favorite subject was Math. In 1966, she graduated from Camilla Consolidated High School. After graduation, she worked various jobs before establishing a career in retail. She held a variety of roles including Assistant Manager.

Her early teachings began at home and working in the fields, where she would hide under large tobacco leaves and take a nap in the shade. She was introduced to the Lord at an incredibly early age, attending Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, on River Road, in Camilla, Georgia, with her family.

She enjoyed school and was a strong advocate for education. One of her first jobs was working at a beauty salon at age 17. She approached the owner walking down the street and asked for a job. She got it. Prior to the owner moving to another state, she learned many aspects of the salon business.

During her time in between Camilla, Georgia, and the country, she became acquainted with John Toombs, Jr. A few years after graduation, they would later date, welcome their first child together, Felicity Toombs, and she would marry the Airman 1st Class, on September 24, 1972.

The young couple moved to Las Vegas, Nevada on April 28, 1973, where John was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base. A couple of years later, they would welcome their youngest daughter, Terkessa "Cheree" Toombs.

During their marriage, she was a devoted mother and wife. She made their house a home with beautiful home décor, homecooked meals, and supported her daughters through their years of ballet, gymnastics, Girl Scouts, soccer, swimming, and modeling school.

Following in her parents' footsteps, who maintained a beautiful garden in Baconton, Georgia, Freddie Mae had an impeccable green thumb. This gift would garner her "Yard of the Month" on multiple occasions during their time at Nellis Air Force Base. She found immense joy in family game nights, cross country road trips, and travel to California to visit amusement parks, aquariums, zoos, and historical monuments.

After 13 years of marriage, she and John parted ways, however remained extremely close.

She and her girls moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where she developed a love for crafting. She found joy in creating hair bows, handbags, appliqueing t-shirts, and designing beautiful seasonal wreaths which she sold at local markets.

Her favorite pastimes included travel, taking pictures, going to musicals, cheering on the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team, spending time with seniors, and attending the Johnson Family Reunions.

She loved her family and attending the family reunions was something she looked forward to. Whether she served on a committee, when hosted in her city, or fellowshipped with relatives in their city, she would always have a "good time," as she often said.

Her encouraging words, infectious laughter, and warm hugs was a testament to her love. She often greeted others as "Sweetheart" or "Love" and always offered a welcoming spirit, even when she did not feel her best.

More than family or her favorite pastimes, she loved the Lord! She was a devout member of the Church of Christ, where she helped with administrative details, community outreach, and numerous church celebrations and events.

Freddie Mae, who was affectionately known as "Peaches," built a legacy of love. She leaves to cherish many precious memories to her two daughters, Felicity Heyward of Duluth, Georgia, and Terkessa "Cheree" Toombs, of Las Vegas, Nevada; their father, Msgt. John Toombs, Jr. (USAF, retired) of Las Vegas, Nevada, who remained a valued member of the family; two grandchildren, granddaughter, Lauren Heyward of Duluth, Georgia and grandson, Kyle Leite, of Las Vegas, Nevada; two surviving siblings, her sister, Grace Turner and younger brother, Walter Lee Johnson, both of Baconton, Georgia; a host of loving cousins spanning from Houston, Texas to South Florida; several nieces and nephews; longtime classmates, dear friends, and her devoted church family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Douglas and Piccola Johnson and siblings Eliza Livingston and David Johnson.

On December 20th, 2024, in the early hours of the morning, Freddie Mae slipped into eternal rest, at her residence in Baconton, Georgia, surrounded by her two daughters.

She graced our lives with joy, love, unwavering faith, and wisdom. Despite how she felt in her later years, she led with acompassionate heart and helping hand. If you asked how she was doing, she would say, "I won't complain."
