IN LOVING MEMORY OF
George Willard
Price
November 21, 1950 – July 26, 2020
Superintendent George Willard Price, a beloved husband, father, brother, Pastor, and friend, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, July 26, 2020.
George W. Price was the son of Jethro Price Sr. and Eloise Dunlap Price: he was the third child of eight children, five of which preceded him in death. George was reared in Camilla, graduating from Camilla Consolidated High School in 1968. His natural athletic ability was recognized early and celebrated as he was awarded the athlete of the year. After one year at Albany State University in Albany, Georgia, George moved to Newark New Jersey where he was employed at a bakery. This was his first job with a decent wage with good working conditions. However, the money could not replace the loneliness he felt and the desire to be reunited with his high school sweetheart, Vera Ruth Crawford. On October 27, 1970, George and Vera were joined in marital bliss, after he returned to Georgia; four children were birthed.
With the war/conflict being unresolved and the draft being in effect, it wasn't long before Uncle Sam came knocking on George's door. He was drafted into the United States Army to fight in the Vietnam War. After the war, George continued his military service and enlisted in the Army on June 1, 1970. He along with his family traveled abroad, calling Fort Hood, Texas, Fort Benning, Georgia, and Berlin, Germany "home". Living between two saved families, God really began to move in his family as The Lord was drawing George to a relationship with Him.
Missionary Laura Draper was a powerful influence on George life and advised him to find a Church of God in Christ when the family returned to the states in 1977. It was at that time he came into a true saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. George, Vera, and family joined Prayer and Faith Temple COGIC under the leadership and tutelage of Superintendent Warren K. Brown and Missionary Esther Brown in Columbus, Georgia. There he received the Baptism of the Holy Ghost with Elder Gregory Davis tarrying and encouraging him. George grew in grace and the knowledge of God at Prayer and Faith Temple, serving with Elder Davis in various capacities. He served as trustee, working closely with the finances, and in the diaconate. Superintendent and Missionary Brown were godly examples and always a source of encouragement. The Price Family worshiped there from 1977-1985.
As George flourished spiritually, he also prospered secularly and matriculated through the ranks. It was at Fort Benning where he trained to be a drill sergeant and successfully completed number one in his class. In 1985, he received military orders to Bamberg Germany and helped established True Saints Church of God in Christ at Bamberg Base under the leadership of Pastor Bruton and Elder Rogers. There George served as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, and Y.P. W.W. Teacher. He also served as a Deacon and Finance Chairman.
In July 1988, Deacon Price received military orders to move to Fort Riley, Kansas and began working at the Replacement Center. He would scout out new soldiers who listed Church of God in Christ as their affiliation. It was through the Army and Deacon Price's witness of Jesus Christ that many souls were added to the Kingdom. In 1991, he retired Sergeant First Class from the United States Army after 21 years of military service.
Deacon Price George served diligently at Bobbitt Temple Church of God In Christ under the leadership of Pastor Clarence and Mother Katherine Lucas. Here he was licensed as a minister in 1991 and an Elder in 1992. Through his God given gift of wisdom and finance, Elder Price helped Bobbitt Temple build a brand-new edifice. It was at that time the name was changed to Holy Temple Church of God in Christ. After the passing of Pastor Lucas, Elder Price's innate leadership was noticed, and his faithfulness was rewarded. He was assigned to the pastorate of Holy Temple COGIC in June 1999 and elevated to the office of Superintendent of Finances, serving both Bishop J.C. Gilkey, Sr. and Bishop Mark L. Gilkey: he remained faithfully in that position until his demise. Superintendent Price loved the Church of God In Christ and was an avid supporter on all levels.
Superintendent Price was a believer of education. On May 18, 1996 he received his Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Kansas State University. He was a skilled teacher and passionate about ministering to young people. Superintendent Price worked at Junction City High (USD 475) school for 3 years and mentored at the Boys Home in Junction City, Kansas. He was very instrumental in helping many young men receive their GED, ultimately turning their lives around. He was employed with the Department of Veteran affairs as a Benefits Customer Service Representative until his earthly transition, aiding United States veterans secure their benefits.
Superintendent George Willard Price leaves to cherish his memory the love of his life, Vera Ruth Crawford Price; his four children, Preshana Price of Atlanta, Georgia, Terrance Price of Oregon, Tarrance Price (Dion) of Valparaiso, Indiana, and Tempest Price of Junction City, Kansas. Three grandchildren, Ezra Alexander Lepriest Cox, "Ezzie", Torrance Josiah Price "TJ", and Michael Andrew Copeland II "MAC". One sister, Irma Holmes of Albany, Georgia, one brother, Marvin Price (wife) of Albany, Georgia and one Great Uncle Retired Sergeant Major Charles Dunlap (Loraine), Killeen, Texas. A host of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Last but certainly not least Superintendent Price's legacy will be honored by his loving church family, district, and jurisdiction.
