Glennelle Theresia Oliver Marcus, affectionately known as “Dean,” “G.O.,” and “Glenn,” departed this life on September 21, 2026, at her residence. Born on June 7, 1925, in Baconton, Georgia, in Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Mr. Julius Oliver and Mrs. Rosa Bell Childs Oliver. She grew up in rural South Georgia alongside her siblings, Arderma, Alton, and Collin, and across the years became the beloved matriarch, keeper of memories, source of wisdom, and steady heart of a family whose story spans generations.

Before she was known for her work, her devotion to family, or her place in the community, Glennelle was a woman grounded in faith. Prayer was woven into her childhood, and her family prayed before meals, at bedtime, and throughout everyday life. In 1936, she joined St. James Baptist Church. As a young girl, she took part in Sunday School, Baptist youth activities, conventions, Christian education, and other church programs. What began in childhood became a lifelong commitment to God and the church, a foundation that guided her through every season of her life.

Glennelle’s pursuit of education reflected both determination and grace. She entered college in 1943 and earned her degree in 1946, becoming a professional educator at a time when opportunities for Black women were far more limited than they would become for later generations. In June 1946, at just twenty-one years old, she graduated from Fort Valley State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education. She embraced campus life wholeheartedly, participating in the YWCA, NAACP, Business Club, Fort Valley State College Choir, The Flame Staff, Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, and other collegiate activities. Music held a special place in her heart, and she fondly remembered singing with the college choir, along with the professors, teachers, and mentors who helped shape her during those formative years.

Shortly after graduating from college, Glennelle began her professional career in 1946 with the Mitchell County Board of Education, beginning approximately 37⅓ years devoted to education. Through more than 37⅓ years of service, she became part of the educational history of Mitchell County and helped shape the lives of countless young people. Her work was more than a career; it was a calling marked by commitment, service, and a deep belief in the power of learning to open doors and transform lives.

Even after retirement, Glennelle remained closely connected to the profession she had served so faithfully. Through the Georgia Retired Educators Association and the Mitchell Baker Unit of Retired Educators, she continued in fellowship with fellow educators and stayed active in the values of education, service, and community involvement that had long defined her life. Her example stands as a testament to constancy, dignity, and the quiet strength of a woman who gave generously of herself.

In 1950, Glennelle married Clayton Marcus Sr., and together they built a family that became one of her life’s greatest joys. She leaves to cherish her memory her four sons: Clayton Marcus, known as Butch; Jeffery Marcus of Austell, Georgia; Alan Marcus of Baconton, Georgia; and Julian Marcus of Albany, Georgia. She is also lovingly remembered by her daughters-in-law, Debra and Shirlette, and by her grandchildren, Jason, Chad, Brad, DeeDee, Clayton, Everette, Corey, Jay, Monica, Whitney, DJ, Marcus-Marcus, Gala, and Julianni. In each generation, her love, guidance, faith, and enduring presence will continue to be felt. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Julius Oliver and Mrs. Rosa Bell Childs Oliver.

Family and friends are invited to honor and remember Glennelle during the viewing on Friday, October 2, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, 144 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, Baconton, Georgia 31716. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Saint Mary Missionary Baptist Church, 6829 St. Mary Road, Baconton, Georgia 31716. Burial will follow at Saint Mary Memorial Cemetery, 6829 St. Mary Road, Baconton, Georgia 31716.

Glennelle Theresia Oliver Marcus lived a life of faith, learning, service, and love. She strengthened her family, uplifted her community, and left an imprint on all who were blessed to know her. Her memory will be treasured, her example will endure, and her legacy will continue in the lives of those she loved and inspired.
