BIOGRAPHY
Deacon James (Jay) Broadway, Sr., was baptized at an early age at St. Matthews Missionary Baptist Church, Newton, Georgia where he was a member for over seventy years. He was ordained as a deacon in 1967. Deacon Broadway became Vice Chairman in 1979 and Chairman of the Deacon Board in 1981. During his tenure as chairman, he served as Treasurer of Brothers Department of the First District Union Meeting for 20 years. He served faithfully, giving leadership and guidance to his church family. Deacon Broadway was a retired farmer who took pride in his farming and raising livestock.
James (Jay) Broadway, Sr., was born October 1, 1924, a son to the late Grady Broadway, Sr., and Oriska Wright Broadway. He was called quietly in his sleep on March 30, 2011.
Deacon Broadway was devoted and happily married to the late Emma Johnson Broadway for over sixty-five (65) years. This union was blessed with nine (9) children. Two (2) of the nine children preceded him in death, Willie Henry Broadway and Cynthia Broadway-Miller. He was also preceded in death by the following siblings; Carl Broadway Sr., Grady Broadway Jr., Vaulden (Red) Gadson, Lynwood Gadson, Eula Anderson, Francine Jackson, Jesse Broadway and Hattie Broadway.
Those left to cherish fond and loving memories are his children; Hattie (Willie B) Carter, Leesburg, Georgia, Gwendolyn (Eddie) King, Newton, Georgia, Acier Broadway, James (Ruthel) Broadway, Christine Ellis, Leona (Calvin) Brown, Annie (Aristo) Hill, Albany, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Frances Broadway, Pelham, Georgia; one sister, Orangelo Jackson, Mami, Florida; godsons, Tyrone Burns, Bainbridge, Georgia, Reverend Henry Hogan, III, Culberth, Georgia; a devoted nephew, Willie Lee (Bill) Johnson, Newton, Georgia; seventeen grandchildren, Anthony (Shanetta) Broadway, Franyetta (Darrell) Burley, Camilla, Georgia, Shenita Carter, Afghanistan, Ashley (Andre) Calhoun, Pelham, Georgia, Kimberly Carter, Leesburg, Georgia, Juanita Broadway, Dina (Larry) Parks, Atlanta, GA., Lisa Broadway, Pamela (Kenneth) Johnson, Eddie K. King, Calvin Brown Jr., Jacorey Brown, Elbert Williams, II, Antoine Hill, Anfernee Hill, Albany, GA., Calvin and Erika Johnson, Waycross, GA., brother and sister-in-laws; Louise Broadway, Newton, GA., Willie Mae Gadson, Boston, MA., Charlie (Doris) Johnson Jr., Greenville, SC., Calip (Ossie) Johnson, Frank Johnson, Newton, GA., and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
FUNERAL SERVICE
The funeral service of James Broadway, Sr., will be conducted Saturday, April
2, 2011, at 11:00 a.m., at Saint Matthews Missionary Baptist Church, 3298
Elmodel Highway, Newton, Georgia. Reverend Henry Hogan will
officiate.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Deacons of Saint Matthews Missionary Baptist
Church, Lodge of Robert Pride.
Active Pallbearers will be Curtis Broadway, John Broadway, Mark Lewis, Amin Muhammad, Deacon Richmond Reid, Jeffery Shavers.
COMMITTAL SERVICE
The committal service will follow at the Saint Matthews Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
