Obituary

Mr. James Calhoun was born on February 28, 1940, in Mitchell County, Georgia. He was the fourth of twelve children born to Deacon Cleophus Calhoun, Sr. and Carrie Bell Dent Calhoun.

He grew up in the close nit community of Greenough with his family. He attended the public schools of Mitchell County, Georgia. As was norm during the time, he would miss school to work on the family farm during the planting season and harvesting season. His family was close and very hardworking. The family thrived but lost four during childhood: RC, Carrie Lue, Siely, and Rosa Lee who were always remembered through the years.

This is where he developed his knack for tinkering. After his schooling he joined the work force, where he worked as a farmer, landscaper, certified welder, business owner, and government contractor. He worked in various location in Michigan, Ohio, Florida, & Georgia. After retirement he returned to settle down at his homestead in the Greenough Community.

At an early age, he confessed Christ and joined Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorage of R.L. Jones. He was a member of the Usher Board and sang in the choir in his younger years. After returning to the community, he continued his membership.

During retirement he enjoyed traveling, watching Discovery Channel, Western Programs and spending time with friends and family. Even in retirement you could not take farmer out of James, he continued by raising chickens for eggs and planting large gardens to include okra, beans, peas (which the deer loved), sugar cane , and fruit trees.

He preceded in death by his parents, Cleophus Calhoun, Sr, and Carrie Bell Dent Calhoun; his brothers Cleophus, Jr, and Richard Calhoun; his sister Lillie Rene Calhoun Mosely-Josephs; his first wife Bernestine Nelson- Calhoun, and foster daughter Wilnesha Mathis.
