Obituary

James Eugene Masten, Jr., son of the late James Eugene Masten and Maria Mixon, was born on April 17, 1947 in Camilla, Georgia.

At an early age, he confessed CHRIST and became a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church.

Growing up in Camilla and graduating from Camilla Consolidated High School, he studied at Albany State College, now Albany State University, receiving a undergraduate degree in Business Administration.  Continuing his studies at ASU, he received a Master's Degree in Psychology.  While at ASU he pledged Phi Beta Kappa.

In 1969, "Jet", as he was affectionately called, enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War.  While in the army, he received a National Defense Service Medal.  He served his country until he was honorably discharged.

James also studied at New York School of Accounting where he graduated with honors.  He started a career with Wall Street at the New York Stock Exchange.

James decided to move back to the South.  Upon moving back he became a professor of Psychology at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida.

James has worked at several agencies in Florida.  His affiliations included being a member of the American Legion Post 518 where he served as Vice-Commander until his health failed.

He was united in Holy Matrimony to the former Jane Johnson.  This union was blessed with one daughter, Stephanie.

Preceding him in death was a sister, Linda Masten Williams and a cousin, Wayne Mixon.

He departed this life on Tuesday, October 21, 2014, at Willson's Hospice House in Albany, Georgia.

He leaves to cherish his memories a wife, Jane Masten of Camilla, Georgia; four children, Stephanie Masten-Gaines (McArthur) of Camilla, Georgia, Ethel Masten of Newport News, Virginia, Jane Masten of Atlanta, Georgia, Kumoski Thomas of Camilla, Georgia; two stepchildren who were very dear to his heart, Curtis Johnson and Ethel Robinson of Camilla, Georgia; ten grandchildren, Anntenette, Janee, Baron, Jr., Daron, Byron, Jamie, Evelyn, Sharay, Kumoski, Jr., Kaled; seven great grandchildren; one sister, Eloise Thomas-Williams of Jacksonville, Florida; two brothers, John Mixon of New Jersey, Paul Mixon of New York, New York; two special cousins, Kaotris Mixon-Clayton of Pelham, Georgia, Michael Mixon of Camilla, Georgia; two sisters-in-law, Eloise Johnson of Sale City, Georgia, Rosa Johnson of Camilla, Georgia; four brothers-in-law, Darryl Gibbs, Robert Gibbs of Albany, Georgia, Charlie Gibbs, III of Camilla, Georgia, Edward Pinkins, III of El Paso, Texas; a host of other relatives and friends.



His Journey's Just Begun

Don't think of him as gone away
His journey's just begun,
Life holds so many facets
This earth is only one.


Just think of him as resting
From the sorrows and the tears
In a place of warmth and comfort
Where there are no days and years.


Think how he must be wishing
That we could know today
How nothing but sadness
Can really pass away.

And think of him as living
In the hearts of those he touched...
For nothing loved is ever lost
And he was loved so much.
