Obituary

Mr. Jetson (Buddy) Toombs, Sr. was the 6 th child born on November 10, 1922, to the union of the late Joseph Toombs and Commie Toombs.  He was a life-long resident of Camilla (Mitchell County) Georgia.

He was united in holy matrimony to Lucile Hill in September, 1945.  Three wonderful children were added to their union.

Mr. Toombs began his formal school education at the Oak Grove Church School.  He was the son of a farmer and with there being a need to help his father on the farm, Jetson's education was limited to the beginning of the eighth grade.  In school he enjoyed sports such as pole vaulting, high jumping and several other activities. But baseball was the activity that excited him most and the activity where he exceptionally excelled.

In 1939, when Jetson was 17 years old, the Oak Grove Baseball team was reorganized.  He became a part of that organization as one of the main players rotating between pitcher and shortstop.  Because of occupational responsibilities, all games were played on Saturdays.  He played against teams from Camilla and surrounding counties.  Mr. Toombs would often vividly recount the experience of pitching against two teams (Ichauway and Elmodel) in one day, a double-header, and leading his team to victory in both games.  Jetson played for Oak Grove for nine years before being injured.  At the age of 82, he was the only surviving player from the team.  In 2006, Mr. Toombs was inducted into the Mitchell County Hall of Fame for his tremendous baseball talents and achievements.

Mr. Toombs began his church affiliation when he accepted Christ at an early age under the leadership of Rev. R.W. Burgess at the Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Camilla, Georgia.  He served faithfully for many years in different capacities in the church, but found his greatest fulfillment as an usher on the Usher Board, where he utilized his skills as a trainer and leader.  Even though he enjoyed being an usher, he later joined the Deacons Ministry and also served as the Sunday school church bus driver.  He worked and dedicated himself to church service until he was called from labor to reward.  His dedication and service to the church will be sorely missed.

Mr. Toombs was also known for his entrepreneurial spirit.  He rose from being a sharecropper to actively pursue the purchase of his own plot of land.  In later years he started a lawn service business and faithfully served his neighbors and other community members for numerous years; all for the purpose of being a pillar in his community, as well as supporting his family.

Mr. Toombs, beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather passed away peacefully on January 11, 2022 at the age of 99.

He will be remembered by his family as a loving, wise (never sugar-coating the truth), God-fearing man, who served the Lord with a faithful heart and showed love and compassion to all who crossed his path…Once you met him, you couldn't help but love him!

He was preceded in death by his siblings: Frank Toombs, Theodore Toombs, Liz Toombs, Joseph (Honeychild) Toombs, Eliza Kelly, Carrie Mae Sampson.

An empty place is at our house, but memories will be cherished by his loving wife, Mrs. Lucile Toombs of Camilla, Georgia; children, Mr. Jetson (Gloria) Toombs, Jr. of Augusta, Georgia, Ms. Virginia (Otis Larry-deceased) Quimbley of Camilla, Georgia, Ms. Julia A. Toombs of Camilla, Georgia; grandchildren, Mr. Antonio (Shaletha) Pinkins of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Ms. Shakendra Toombs of Austell, Georgia, Mr. Tory (Abby) Quimbley of Jacksonville, Florida, Mr. Travis Quimbley of Camilla, Georgia, and Dr. Sheneé Toombs of Silver Spring, Maryland; several great grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
