Obituary

Mary Toombs was born in Mitchell County, Sale City, Georgia, on January 4, 1930 to the late Willie Davis and Hattie Brown Davis. She was the last survivor of nine siblings.

At an early age, Mary accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and united with Brown Chapel CME Church.  She also joined St. Paul AME Church and Habakkuk Missionary Baptist Church.  She later joined Beulah Missionary Baptist Church where she was a faithful, devoted member.  She remained active until her health began to fail.  She was very dutiful in several ministries which included the Senior Choir, Pastor Aide, Culinary Committee, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and yearly Easter programs (making all the crosses for Easter Palm Sunday Service).

At a young age, Mary met and married John Robert Toombs, who preceded her in death.  Eleven children were added to their union.  One son, Freddie C. Toombs, preceded her in death.

Mary lived a long, long, happy, healthy life.  Her longevity did not include any prescriptive medications during her 94 years of life.

Mary lived and enjoyed.  Oh, how she loved her relatives and church family.  She enjoyed preparing tasty dishes, baking and entertaining.  Her hobbies were crocheting, needle pointing, sewing, reading, traveling, bingo, doing crossword puzzles, and most of all dancing to music.

During Mary's longevity of life, she had the opportunity of serving in the community in many capacities; being the Mitchell County School System Food Service Program, RCM Enterprises, Mitchell County Neighborhood Center, Mitchell County Retirement Home.

She truly loved working with and being engaged with others.

On Wednesday, October 2, 2024, Mary departed this earthly life and entered into eternal rest very peacefully.

Mary leaves to cherish her many precious memories four sons, Eddie C. (Gwen) Toombs, Adolph Toombs of Camilla, Georgia, John Toombs of Las Vegas, Nevada, Forrest (Sonya) Toombs of Vancouver, Washington; six daughters, Shirley (Roman) Mobley, Alice Quimbly of Augusta, Georgia, Bonnie (Starley) Odoms, Angela Toombs of Albany, Georgia, Mary (Cain) Morman, Lucille Hill of Camilla, Georgia; she also reared two grandchildren, Tammie Toombs and Tora (Nathaniel) Williams; one sister-in-law, Claretha Keaton of Houston, Texas; thirty-four grandchildren; sixty-five great grandchildren; thirty-six great-great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Claretha Keaton of Houston Texas and Lillian Toombs of Miami, Florida; two dedicated caregivers, Patricia Barney and Veronica Hill; a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives.
