Obituary
Melvin was educated by the Newton Public School System in Newton, Georgia. He attended East Baker Elementary and East Baker High Schools. Brother Brown became an activist of the Baker County Civil Rights Movement. It was during this era that he demanded to be served by a Newton Drug Store where he had grown up. He was a very active member of Thankful Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully on the Usher Board.
Upon leaving high school, Melvin Brown began a new educational journey. He attended Albany State University (formerly Albany State College) , Albany, Georgia for more than three years, majoring in Business. He also attended Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan for two years, majoring in Music. In 1966, he along with his two favorite cousins, William Childs and Vernon Childs moved with his aunt, Leana Mae Childs, to Detroit, Michigan.
Shortly after landing a job at General Motors, Melvin met the love of his life, Rainell, whom he married and two beautiful daughters became their hearts.
He leaves to celebrate his life and cherish his memories: a devoted wife, Rainell Brown; two daughters, Antoinette (Toni) and Devin Brown; two grandchildren, Ellis Exton and Tyler Williams; one brother, Andre Shannon; two sisters, Sharon Shannon and Latonya Shannon; and an aunt whom he thought of as a mother, Christine Hall.
He is also survived by a host of aunts, uncles, one very special cousin, Vernon Childs, other relatives and friends.
FUNERAL SERVICE
The funeral service of Melvin Brown will be conducted Saturday, June 22, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., at Thankful Missionary Baptist Church, 4888 Newton Highway, Newton, Georgia. Reverend Wadis Williams, pastor. Reverend Hosea Miller will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Flower Bearers will be friends of the family.
Pallbearers will be Alan Childs, William Childs, Samuel Strange, Darrell Turner, Howard Webb.
Don't think of him as gone away
his journey's just begun,
life holds so many facets
this earth is only one.
Just think of him as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.
Think how he must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.
And think of him as living
in the hearts of those he touched...
for nothing loved is ever lost
and he was loved so much.
