Sueann Elaine Hammonds McGee, the youngest of six children, was born on February 24, 1951 to the late Cora Calhoun and George Bee McGee.
She attended David Vester Elementary School in Sale City, Georgia. She went on to Camilla Consolidated School, where she graduated with the class of 1969. She also attended Albany State College.
Throughout her childhood, Sueann was nurtured in the word of God. As a youth, she began her fellowship with the Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend R. L. Jones. She later united with Higher Heights Fellowship in Albany, Georgia, under the leadership of Dr. Mildred Wimberly. Sueann was a woman who was strong in faith, in character, and in wisdom.
She was united in marriage to Jessie Lee Hammonds, who preceded her in death. To this union five children were born.
She was a substitute teacher with the Mitchell County School System for several years. She was also employed with Equity Group Division retiring after twenty-five years of service. Sueann is also known as being the first African American baseball umpire.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters Beatrice Tim, Jeanette McRoy.
She departed this life on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida.
She leaves to cherish her memories, seven children, Stacey McGee of Cleveland, Ohio, Tracey (Sherri) McGee of Cairo, Georgia, Micheal Hammonds of Warner Robins, Georgia, Michelle (Keith) Hammonds, Coraetta (Michael) Williams of West Palm Beach, Florida, Audrey (Barry) Hammonds of Boynton Beach, Florida, Kimberly (Jamie) Hammonds of Albany, Georgia; five sisters, Vera May Jenkins, Joyce Jenkins of Boynton Beach, Florida, Mary Lee (James) Hadley of Camilla, Georgia; special friends, Marietta Cochran (Big Oma), Mary Ann Ross and Grace Broadwater of Camilla, Georgia, Joann Byam of Boynton Beach, Florida; thirteen grandchildren; four great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
