Willie Clint Carter Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Cousin, & Friend was born November 13,1942 in Mitchell County Camilla, Georgia. He was the only child of Henrietta Hayward Johns (Camilla, GA) deceased, and George Frank Carter (Jacksonville, FL) deceased. He is the first grandson of Asbury Hayward and Annie Mae (Wilson) Hayward both deceased. Willie Clint Carter graduated from Camilla Consolidated School in 1961 and continued his undergraduate education matriculating into the HBCU of Tuskegee University (Institute) graduating in 1965 with a BS degree in Electronics and Commercial Industries.
Upon graduating from Tuskegee Institute Clint was employed by IBM Federal Systems Division Huntsville, AL. He had the awesome opportunity to work in the NASA Apollo Space Program, having worked on fifteen of the Apollo Space Crafts, and received awards for his participation specifically working on the Apollo 11 Spaceflight that landed the first man on the moon July 20, 1969. During this period of his employment time Clint was drafted by the United States Army, but fortunately he was able to volunteer to join the United States Navy where he spent two years as an active reservist aboard the USS WARPS Aircraft Carrier. After serving and completing his time in the Navy Clint received an honorable discharge and he returned to IBM Federal Systems Huntsville, AL to continue his career. Clint was transferred to IBM Federal Systems Division Owego, New York in 1972. Clint worked specifically with classified programs and had top secret clearance. The last programs Clint worked on before his early retirement were the Air Force Stealth Fighter and Stealth Bomber programs.
Clint's "working retirement jobs" included Horry Georgetown Technical College as the first Black Academic Dean in Computer Science Department– Conway Campus. Clint later transferred to develop the College Grand Strand Campus, and he was promoted to the office of the first Black Campus Dean. He later transferred to the Computer Technology Department as a Professor of Computer Science and retired from Horry Georgetown Technical College having served the college for thirteen years.
In his role as husband, father, and grandfather (Poppy/Pop Pop), his family was extremely important to him. He loved them all very much! He was especially thrilled when he reconnected with his "Hometown Girl" Joan, and they were joined in marriage January 2007. He enjoyed watching the news, listening to "old School Soul Music, especially the Temptations! Clint thought he was a gourmet chef when cooking on his grill, and his yard was his pride and joy! He loved a beautifully landscaped yard, and he enjoyed having his personal garden that he and Joan worked in together. During the football season he liked watching the Carolina Panthers, trying to find his grandson LJ playing college football on his computer, and eating Oreo Cookies and ice cream. Clint was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Lambda Epsilon Chapter. He pledged and crossed the burning sands when attending Tuskegee in 1964. He remained an active member for 60 years. Clint attended Friendship Baptist Church in Conway, SC. Also important to Clint was his involvement and participation in the Civil Rights movement. He was a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). He participated in several Marches in Montgomery, AL during the Civil Rights Movement including the Selma to Montgomery March. He was very active in the voter registration program in Alabama at Tuskegee Institute.
Willie Clint Carter was preceded in death by his parents Henrietta Hayward Johns and George Frank Carter. Brother Frank Carter, Brother-in-Law Curtis Griffin, Grand Father and Mother-in-Law Jesse and Dr. Allene Reed, Brother-in-Law Dr. Jesse Reed III; Grandparents Asbury and Annie Mae Hayward, Grand Mother-in-Law Ida Keeling, Five Brother-in-Laws, One-Sister-in-Law.
Clint loved his wife, and his family. Willie Clint Carter was born into eternal life on Thursday, May 16, 2024. Left to cherish his loving memories are his wife of 17 years Joan Wallace Carter, Myrtle Beach, SC; daughters LeShaun Nevels (James) of Wilmington DE, Shelan Carter-Wilson of Nashville, TN, and son Hayward Keeling Carter (Gabrielle Marshall) of Charlotte, NC, Bonus Daughters Velvett Sculark (Senior Minister James) of Albany GA, Erica Reese (Myron) of Greenville, SC, Jessica Brown (Brandon) of Conyers, GA, Sister Rose Griffin of Jacksonville, FL, Sister – in- Law Veronica Carter of Jacksonville, Fl. Grandchildren Victoria Nevels, James Bradley "LJ" Nevels, Makenzie Wilson, Laylah Wilson, Jesiah Marshall. Bonus Grandchildren Maya Farmer (Chris), Courtney Moore (Kardius), Jermain Reese (Brandeja), Bradley, Boston, Blake, Four great-grandchildren and a host of Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, Friends, extended family, and relatives.
